We have known each other since our eldest kids, now both 17, were newborns. We started Act Locally Golden in 2019 because we wanted to positively impact our community while also having fun with friends at local venues. We select one Golden-area non-profit each year to support, pooling our resources towards a common goal. We assist the non-profit through volunteering, holding fundraiser and publicizing their mission and events.
Q: What are a couple of your favorite restaurants or breweries in our community?
Janet: I love Bonfire Burritos. That’s my all-time favorite food. I always order the chupacabra. Audrey: Cannonball Creek is my absolute favorite brewery. I think I was there on the very first day they opened. Abejas is my favorite Golden restaurant. My husband and I like to go there on date night. The food is great and so are the cocktails.
Q: How long have you lived or worked in our community?
Audrey: I’ve lived here for 25 years and worked here for the last eight of those years at Mitchell Elementary. Janet: I’ve lived here for 21 years.
Q: What advice would you give to yourself 10 years ago?
Janet: Worry less about perfection. Audrey: Don’t overthink things so much.
Q: What current or former local business makes you the most nostalgic about our community?
Janet: The Windy Saddle because we used to go with our kids and friends’ kids and hang out in the back playroom and do the cupcake walks. Audrey: For similar reasons, Golden City Brewery. The kids would play on the train that GCB used to have outside while the adults would enjoy a beer.
Q: What is your favorite thing or something unique about our community?
Audrey: I love running along the creek. It’s beautiful no matter what time of year. Janet: Golden feels like home. We always say Golden is like an extension of our living room because we always run into people we know downtown.
Q: What is something interesting that most people don’t know about you?
Janet: I ran a marathon because it was my impossible thing to do. Audrey: I’ve been to Tibet. It was absolutely beautiful.
Q: Who inspires you to be better?
Janet: My kids because what we do now is going to affect the future they have. Audrey: Anyone going above and beyond to do the right thing inspires me.
Q: Finally, what 3 words or phrases come to mind when you think of the word HOME?
Janet: Laughter, belonging and comfort. Audrey: Love, inclusion and warmth.
